Oculus Rift support PLEASE! 21 Dec 2013 09:24 #20359

Ive just downloaded the CCD to run on a driving simulator Im building and its running quite well. Ive checked out previous threads and technical support seems to have stalled over setting up this game to run the Oculus Rift VR helmet, because "customs blocked there delivery" of it back in October 2013. Can someone please give these developers at CCD a reality check and ask them politely to get on board with the Rift and write code, or at least let someone outside of there community do it, so these helmets will work on their game and so instantly improve game awareness and ultimately sales.

Don't let people tell you the VR helmets are not for sale, they are, Ive just ordered one directly from their site, no questions asked, and there's been over 40,000 sold and delivered worldwide to date.
They cost $300 USD plus international delivery to Australia was a further $76, estimated 14 days ( and no, its not going to get blocked at customs) and when you consider as soon as somebody makes this thing work on this programme, I will get a better surround feel to this game than 6 wrap around screens will ever give me and it come in cheaper than the first 27 inch monitor that Ive had to buy, its quite good value.

There are only about 9 games currently supporting the Rift in the market place, but more coming each week, so come on CCD, get amongst the fore runners here and all the extra hype, publicity and sales it will generate because you have the basics here for a proper real life driving simulator. Charge extra for the rift edition if you want, but please get a patch or a programme written for it, because this is a case of "build it and they will come!".

The devs are in Russia, and I'm not sure if they have the Rift there (do they?). But I want support for the Rift too  .

I agree that Rift support would be great. ETS 2 has rift support and that gained a lot of attention. A driving game is the one genre that is best suited to rift and a simulator like CCD would work with it well.

Rift support should be an obvious focus for the developers, as it could help gain immense amount of traction. It would catapult the driving simulator into a new realm with minimal tweaks to the game, seen how it already supports head-tracking. Add a second render-point and output the two in the Rift format, and you've got free PR.

I hope the devs are keen enough to pick up on the opportunity.

I have cash tucked away waiting for the consumer HD version of the Rift.. So I'd really love proper support for it in CCD.. The experience would be awesome.

We've tried to purchase it, but without success yet - our customs didn't let it pass.

As I know even the coming retail version will not be HD version.

With due respect and with with no reason to antagonise here, the excuse that we ordered one and Customs held it back, although I do not in a moment doubt that to be true, is somewhat defeatist!

There are currently 40,000 developer packs in use worldwide and cost $300 USD to purchase and takes a credit card and ten minutes of your time to order and the CCD developer team don't even have one of them because "the dog ate their homework".

I see that the mods site has 62,400 hits on it, realistically implying even with multiple revisits a following of 20,000 highly involved users, all paying $19 each for the programme. That's $400,000 of revenue alone from committed CCD users, so please get a little more creative and ask me politely to order you one over here in Australia. Then just fly one game developer over here for a few days, I'll put him up and show him around sunny Perth, he can set up my driving simulator to give me a single wide angle view on one monitor ( another thread, sorry ) and then let him fly home, slightly tanned, clutching the first unit ever to touch your mother soil. They are not ilegal, just rather sought after. That's why they're not getting through, along with other issues, but you can still fly them in personally.

Total cost: one Rift, one return flight.
Reward: a good game on a cutting edge platform.
Outcome: increased subscriptions.

The offer stands, the ball is in your court.

Those aren't proper estimates. Further, if customs stop them, they would be illegal to import. Why would customs hold them back "because they're in high demand"? So long as I know the team is keen to support Rift, I think it's good. It's unfortunate of Russian customs are so strict, but it's the way it is.

Back in June Oculus accepted there were Customs delays and later suspended deliveries to Russia because over 50 where being held by the Post office there, on concerns that they could contravene Russian security guidelines ( which the Rift does not). A simple letter drafted from the company in Russian then allowed delivery to people who downloaded it. The first success story was listed way back on the 22 July 2013. The units where never illegal, just needed a letter from the manufacturer, stating what they did and didn't do.

On December the 4th 2013, Oculus Rift announced it was also now shipping successfully through an agent BayRu. They have since announced that they are fully up to date with deliveries Worldwide as of 10th December, so come on CCD, get one on bloody order!!

The story runs if you are bothered:

developer.oculusvr.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=34&t=2512

"It may be difficult to prove that the embedded controller cannot be used as "cryptographic hardware" and that the head tracker does not contain a "tactical or navigation grade" IMU system, especially if the firmware can be upgraded by the end user. Beware that some ARM embedded processors contain a "hardware crypto engine". Hopefully a document can be provided that will satisfy the stated requirements, showing that the embedded hardware meets Russian security requirements."

Да, полный порядок. Смотрите документы указанные выше (pdf по-английски и docx по-русски). Там содержится вся нужная информация для растаможки.

Yes, complete success. The documents mentioned above (pdf in English + docx in russian ) contain all information needed for customs clearance.

Lates update 4th December 2013

"We're happy to announce oculusvr.com is once again accepting orders for delivery to Russia.

We've partnered with BayRu, a company specifically formed to ship products from the US to Russia. Based on our initial shipments together, we feel confident orders will be successfully delivered to residential and business addresses.

If you place an order shipping to Russia, BayRu will contact you prior to shipment to confirm all of your delivery information. You'll be asked for address confirmation and a scan of your passport as part of the documentation needed for customs clearance. Please note that we can only ship to the address associated with your payment method.

Thanks for your patience while we worked out reliable delivery. We hope you enjoy developing content with the Oculus Rift Development Kit!"
