One of my parent's cars is a VW TDI, which because of the whole dieselgate scandal is being forced to be returned to the dealer in the coming weeks. In the mean time, we have been looking for a good replacement. My parents would love a diesel, manual transmission station wagon (estate), but given that those are probably the 3 rarest things to find in a North American car, we are flexible to other ideas. We have so far looked at a 2016 VW Alltrack, a 2007 BMW 328i Wagon, a 2011 Audi A4 Quattro Wagon, a 2014 328i Sportwagon, and a 2017 Mercedes GLA. Anyone have some suggestions for what else to look at? We don't want to go above $40,000 USD, as we're probably getting around $22,000 for our VW and still have to pay off about $8500.

I speak fluent English, have been studying Japanese for 4 years and know a bit of Russian.

I would recommend going for the AllTrack or the A4 Quattro Wagon. The BMW is a bit to old and the GLA in my opinion is just a lesser, badly executed, jacked up Mercedes A-Class.

I wish they had even half of those cars over here, but they don't. I agree with LM, the GLA we drove somehow managed to feel actually cheap, the seats were a bad vynil, and the door locks were the plastic stick-up ones you would see in a 90's econobox, and they looked like you could break them off quite easily.

We would love an E-class estate, but haven't found many in our area. We'll see if we can locate any. I'll also look some more at any more A4's.

I had found a 530i from 2006 which looked pretty nice, but I think my dad might want something a little newer. Problem is that was the only 5 wagon within 50 miles of us! I'm not kidding when I say that Estates are hard to find!

We found another 328i from 2011 that we might look at today. It's only $18,000, which seems like a good price and we might be able to pay it with cash. We'll see how we like it
